A Local Runner’s Tragic Story

I ask you all to join me in a moment of silence. A dear friend has departed from my life.

Yes, it’s true. My very last jar of Trader Joe’s Raw, Creamy, Unsalted Almond Butter is gone. Depleted from my life. [insert dramatic wail here]. Seriously – this stuff is good and I’d petition for a Trader Joe’s in Gainesville (heck, in Florida!) just to have access to inexpensive, gloriously delicious almond butter. Florida bloggers, who’s with me?? (And in the meantime, who wants to go on a road trip to Atlanta?) :D

There’s only one breakfast that’s fitting for the send off of my jar. Oats in a jar. Specifically the comfort of pumpkin oats.

Hello beautiful. In my oats:

  • 1/3 cup oats, water, rice milk
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin
  • 1 T. golden flax
  • splash of maple syrup
  • lots of cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice!
  • pepitas on top

What a proper and delicious end to my almond butter, and a proper and delicious start to my day!

On a very serious note, I wanted to share a story that Ross told me last night about a mother of kids that go to his middle and high school. Last Friday this woman headed out for her morning run along a highway in a very quiet, rural area. She was definitely a seasoned runner as she was training for a marathon, and she seemed to be doing all the right things, including wearing a reflective vest and even carrying a flashlight. She was running with the flow of traffic (running north on the northbound side of the road) with headphones in listening to her music. She didn’t hear a pick up truck coming up behind her and didn’t step out of the way. The right outside mirror hit the woman on the back of the head, knocking her down. (This wasn’t in the article and I’m not sure how accurate this is, but at school Ross was told her skull was crushed by the force of the blow). They rushed the woman to a hospital but she unfortunately passed away Monday night.

You can see an article in the paper about this here.

I don’t know what you guys do, but this is why Ross and I ALWAYS run (or walk!) against the flow of traffic! If we’re running north, we run along the southbound side specifically so we can see oncoming traffic. I know many runners out there use their iPod while running, but just be careful. It does help you zone out and get in a better running groove, but it also may make your response time to external events a little slower.

Most importantly – take the time to be thankful for your life today! Despite all of our precautions and ways to keep safe, we don’t know what will happen next and we can’t control external situations. I’m not trying to get depressing on you guys, just encouraging you to live your life, seize the moment, be thankful for what you have, and love!

I’m off for what will hopefully be a fortunate series of events today! Please don’t forget to vote for me for the Sam-e good mood blogging gig! Not only is it a dream job, but I think it’s all the more enticing since I’m unemployed! And remember – you can vote once a day per computer per entry (meaning you can vote for more than one person) until October 3oth! Help me get to the top 20!! Thank you! :)

That is such a tragic story, my heart goes out to that family. We had a similar incident happen to a girl’s mother at my high school back in the day… she was running on a 2 lane road and was hit right down the street from my house and passed away. It was terrible. Makes you realize just how precious life truly is and to never take anything for granted :)

That’s terrible. I always try to run in good light and against the flow of traffic. I am going to keep this family in my prayers.

What a sad story. I always run against traffic, because I am so scared of something like this. I hope people read this and remember to RUN SAFELY!

What a sad story! I only run on trails because I’m terrified of traffic!

I have to make road trips to Trader Joe’s too! WV needs one bad!

    You have my vote!

Oh my goodness that’s so sad. What a tragic way to go. I hope the driver of the vehicle realizes what they’ve done…

    Oats in a jar. Classic!

Wow, that’s a wake up call. I’m bad about running on the right side of the road. :(

I’ll keep this family in my prayers.

That is such a sad story. Good reminders. It’s too easy to have something like that happen.

OMGosh, how horrible. That is so scary. As a runner and mother, that just makes me shiver. My heart breaks for her family. Thanks for the advice, I never know which side to run on, which is proper or whatever…so thanks. Now I know. Run against the traffic. Gotcha.

And RIP to your almond butter. Can you order some more, or do you have to physically go to a store to buy it?

Hey I’m up for a road trip to Atlanta!

How said about the tragic death of the runner. When I bike in the road I have to ride with traffic. If I’m walking and have to go in the road, I always walk against traffic (and without headphones!) 1. to see oncoming traffic and 2. to move to the side for bikers.

I’m going to keep voting for you! You’d be awesome in this position!

That is a sad story. I always try to go against the flow too and more often than not, I’m a chicken so I stay on sidewalks where they are available.

I have never tried that almond butter but I hear it is fabulous. I don’t have a Trader Joe’s anywhere near me :(

Awww, that is such a sad story!!! I always run against traffic as well, I just feel too nervous if I don’t.

On another note, I have never tryed Almond Butter like that because we don’t have Trader Joes in Canada!! It makes me very sad. At least I’ve never got to experience the amazingness and then have it taken away from me though!

What a tragic story. That’s why I always run when it’s light out because I’m just so scared of what might be out there in the dark that I don’t see coming!

Also, I can’t believe there are no TJ’s in Florida!! That’s awful!

No Trader Joe’s!? You definitely need to make that trip to Atlanta. And when you get here, you need to let me know so I can take you to Sevananda (www.sevananda.coop)!! I’m a Marnatha Almond Butter girl, myself, but I’ll have to check out the TJ brand when I run out – which won’t be any time in the near future because I just stocked up!!

Sevananda looks wonderful – please take me! :)

I’ve actually never tried Maranatha (haha I’m poor and can’t afford it), but one of the reasons I loved TJ’s is that it’s only $4.99 for a jar of raw AB! Creamy or crunchy, salted or unsalted, raw or roasted…love it. :)
