Blister Prevention

Good morning! I love waking up with windows open – everything seems so peaceful and relaxing, but in an energizing way with the cool air. I combined that with a mug of Yogi Pomegranate Green Tea to really get the energy going.

Breakfast this morning was two slices of Ezekiel cinnamon raisin bread, one with apple butter and one with pumpkin butter. I think the pumpkin butter may be my favorite, it’s so creamy and delicious.

Question for runners: how do you reduce your tendency for blisters? I’m getting blisters on the bottom inside of my arches (particularly a nasty one on my right foot). I’m thinking that for now I need to cover up with mole skin, and also invest in some better socks (most of mine are cotton which aren’t ideal because they get more abrasive when they’re wet/ sweaty). My shoes are also almost a year old. I know they are getting stretched out, especially because I use these shoes for everything – running, gym, walking, hiking, biking, running errands, etc. I’m trying to hold out until after Thanksgiving and will look for Black Friday sales to find a new pair of shoes.

Here’s my plan:

  • only run 2-3 times a week with moleskin for now
  • get new socks that are thin and not cotton
  • save up some money to buy new shoes within the next month or two
  • once I get new shoes, save them for running. Use my current shoes for low/ no impact exercises.

Any other suggestions? Also – any guesses if I’m running weird because of the location of the blisters? I’ve gotten blisters here before, too. Maybe I overpronate?

Don’t forget to keep voting for the Good Mood Gig! It seems a bit of a long shot, but I know if we spread the word and get votes like we did before, it’s totally possible! Don’t forget to vote for the other girls too.  All for one and one for all. :)

I have some of the “breatheable” socks and I’ve had no blisters when I’ve used those like I used to get with my cotton ones. Good luck!

I also love pumpkin butter, which I have at home right now but I still want to get some apple too :) Best of both worlds!

Mole skin for sure! Breathable socks make all the difference. My dad swears by Vaseline. He rubs it in between his toes and his blister prone socks before runs. Hope that helps!

i am a strong advocate of the running technical socks (nikes are my favorite) – i’m MUCH less blister-prone. in the meantime (while old blisters are healing), you can run with two pairs of cotton socks on. they’ll rub up against each other instead of rubbing up against your skin, so your blisters won’t get any worse.

You should go into Lloyd Clarke Sports on 13th street and ask them what they think. They’ll watch you walk, recommend shoes and also they have AWESOME socks. I wear Wright Socks for running to prevent blisters and have never had a single one. LCS also has a website with a coupon on it!

I was getting blisters in the exact same spot as you earlier this summer! Technical socks helped a bit, and getting new running shoes appropriate for my feet solved the problem! I went to a running store and had them evaluate my gait, and now wear support shoes…and don’t get blisters!

My advice? Even if you don’t buy your shoes there, go to a running store to get fitted for shoes so you know what to look for.

Hi! I clicked over from Caitlin’s blog.
I blister in the same spot! I have several tricks for preventing it now.

I think #1 is wearing non-cotton socks. These do the trick for me: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00168B5VI/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

#2 is not letting your socks (or shoes) get too old. I’m on my second set of running socks and the older ones are okay for short runs, but give me blisters if I wear them on long runs. As for shoes, if the midsole feels like a marshmallow, it’s time for new ones. I recently waited too long and had to deal with some significant upper leg pain as a result.

#3 is body glide- I put it anywhere on my feet that are prone to blistering. This seems to help along with the socks.

#4 is lacing- I have narrow feet and have my shoes “lace locked.” My feet move around in the shoes a lot less now.

    Hope this helps!

    Shelly
