Wow, slack much? Sorry for no post yesterday – it was a pretty busy day and that doubled with the fact that I may still or still not be in vacation mode led to no post. Posting will probably continue to be sporadic the rest of this week because we’re heading back down to Sarasota today, but everything will resume back to normal twice-daily posts on Monday.
Fresh food is a tad scare at the moment, so breakfast yesterday was a hummus and tomato grilled sandwich.
I also grabbed a honeycrisp apple (that I totally snatched from my mom’s house) with some TJ’s almond butter to bring to work.
Work was great and went by so quickly, so I was able to get out, run a couple errands and still make it to see my in-laws who stopped by on their drive back to Orlando. As I pulled up they were heading out to Schlotzky’s Deli for a really late lunch, so I tagged along. I didn’t even feel like trying to find something vegan-friendly at a new-to-me fast food joint, so I hopped over to Starbucks and got a grande soy chai tea latte.
I was happy to sit and drink my latte with my family.
Dinner was kind of crap-tastic last night. I tried to make a soup with a soup mix we had, but there wasn’t enough time for it to cook long enough and I didn’t flavor it very well…bleh. Neither of us could finish. You’re not missing much with the forgotten photo.
Question of the day: what do you do when your family/ friends are eating something that you can’t/ don’t eat? Me? I make the best of it and tag along for the experience. Sure, I initially thought, “why can’t we go to one of the many other places we haven’t been to in Gainesville yet that are vegan friendly?” but I dismissed the thought, hopped in the car and went along. Fortunately in this instance there was a Starbucks a couple shops over, so I was able to sneak out and get a drink while my in-laws were ordering, and came back to still be part of the conversation. I’ve found that the most important things you can do when in pursuit of a healthy lifestyle are to be flexible and be prepared. Be flexible in that instead of throwing a fit/ making everyone do everything your way, go with the flow and make the best of it. Be prepared in the sense of always have back-up. In case there was nothing at or near Schlotzky’s, I knew I had my emergency bar (a larabar) in my purse.
I’m off to continue vacation mode in Sarasota for the New Year! Catch ya later!

The tomato sandwich looks amazing. So simple and yummy!
Sounds like a great day. I do the same thing and just tag along for the fun. I’ll usually bring a coffee or some sort of drink like you did. If someone brings up my eating choices, I try to change the subject by complimenting their shirt and asking where they got it or their nail polish or something. It works everytime
I also just tag along for the company. Although I’m an omnivore, I really, really try to eat healthfully and have a strong preference for ethnic foods over what my mom deems “plain American food.” I’m over eating to be social, so if I want the company but not the meal I’ll eat a substantial snack (smoothies are great for this) beforehand and get a coffee or tea at the restaurant.
My parents really like “plain American food” but will also eat Chinese. There are several buffets in this area that can make all of us happy–they have some Chinese, some American, and sometimes a bit of sushi, too. I think these buffets also have vegan friendly options–several of them have the grill option where you choose your food and the chef cooks it in front of you. Are there any options like this in your area that you could suggest when you’re going out w/ non-vegan family members? They’re great compromise restaurants, and the food is at least as good as what I find at fast food restaurants.
Yum! That sandwich looks really good! I think you are right on with the dining with company!
Glad you are enjoying your vacation! That tomato sandwich looks awesome and I agree that you just have to be flexible.
I usually tag along too and just get something to drink, or sometimes I bring my own food in my purse ; ) I have become more flexible over the years!
Hmmm, I don’t have that problem much because I eat pretty much everything. I just look for a healthy option and hang out. Happy New Year!
