So, P90X.
I’ve already gotten some questions and I know others will arise, so I figured I’d head it all off with one post.
Q: Why are you doing P90X?
A: Well, first and foremost, both my husband and I have been wanting to try P90X for years. Yes, years! Crazy how long those infomercials have been around, eh? We’ve always been incredibly budget-conscious, but when I found a great deal I decided to get it as an early birthday gift for Ross. (His birthday is March 3rd…I joked with him I’ve now gotten him our first recovery week for his birthday, not to mention a hotter me for his birthday
).
Q: Why don’t you just go to the gym?
A: I really do believe you can get good workouts anywhere: home, outside, or at the gym. We’ve gotten in a bit of a fitness rut and can’t afford a gym membership. With every other piece of equipment in our apartment gym breaking down, it was the perfect timing to try out P90X.
Q: How did you get such a good deal on P90X? Where did you get it from?
A: Through my sister, I discovered ioffer.com, which is where she and I both bought our P90X sets from. We researched, read reviews, looked at ratings and more. She got hers a week or two before I did and she bought hers, with shipping, for $39. I bought ours, also with shipping, for $55. Still a much greater deal, considering I think it usually retails for $120 to $200, and that included shipping. It also included the fitness book, the nutrition book, all the DVDs, etc.
Q: Is BeachBody (company that sells P90X) paying you to do this?
A: Nope! As you can see above, I bought it myself. Actually, after having them following me on twitter and emailing and tweeting back and forth a bit, I approached them with the idea of doing a blog-based, cyber fitness challenge where we could all go through the 90 days together, and hopefully get everyone a discount. They weren’t interested in that idea, so you can take that up with them. Or just go get it cheap from somewhere else.
Q: What are your goals? Are you trying to lose weight? What about Ross?
A: I am hoping to lose weight. I already eat healthy and work out pretty regularly, so I’m hoping this will help shed some extra pounds I can’t seem to shake. I’m pretty sure it goes without saying that I’d love to look lean and trim, even if it means going through a couple rounds of P90X!
I just asked Ross what his goals are and he said, “I want abs, and I want some good definition”. Ross is already a very lean individual, so he’s just looking to build muscle. (Don’t tell, but I’m secretly excited he’s finally willing to try yoga now, since it’s “Yoga X” and now so much cooler.)
Q: How much did you have to spend on extra equipment?
A: We have lots of dumbbells, yoga mats, and more here. We bought a $10 set of resistance bands at Walmart with a gift card (it’s easier to travel with the resistance bands/ they show you how to do the exercises with the resistance bands, and we know we’ll have at least a few weekends out of town). We’re also going to invest in a different chin up/ pull up bar (we saw one for $15 at Sports Authority, where we also have gift cards) because our current bar won’t fit in our funky doors (and we’ve tried every door – patio doors, closet doors, bathroom doors, etc.).
Q: Doesn’t P90X have a strict nutrition plan you need to follow? Is it vegan? Are you following it?
A: There is a nutrition plan and neither Ross or I will be following it. I really wonder if beachbody consulted a R.D. when they designed their nutrition plan. For the first three weeks of the program, you’re supposed to target at least five servings of protein. Too much! There’s this huge myth that if you eat extra protein you’ll get extra ripped. Your body needs a certain amount of protein per day, and anything extra is basically just converted to glucose, which is the main sugar (carbohydrate) your body uses. Plus, I also have issues that for this same time period, it’s also recommended you eat one carbohydrate, two fats, two vegetables, two dairy, and one fruit throughout your day. I just have issues where almost half of your servings of food groups come from protein. Can I also add that having more than two vegetables won’t kill your diet?! Why not just eat a healthy, balanced diet so you can get more nutrients from glucose containing plants and whole grains instead of extra protein that turns to glucose? Rant over. What we will personally be doing is focusing on reduced added sugars, reduced salt, reduced white flour, and as a vegan, I will be verifying that I am getting adequate protein intake.
Q: Are you scared?
A: Nope!
I’m actually pretty excited. I’m kind of expecting to feel like death at first, because I’ve gotten tons of “it’s killer! It’s so hard!” comments, but it can only make me stronger.
I am a little nervous that all of you will be along for the ride with me, but instead of being intimidated and feeling pressure to not fail, I’m just going to ask that y’all keep me accountable, in the classy, positive manner I know y’all know how to do.
Q: Are you going to be blogging about P90X every day for ninety days?!
A: No. While I will probably mention, “I did Chest and Back and Ab Ripper X today and it kicked my butt!” I’m saving most of my feedback for weekly reviews. Every Monday I’ll have a scheduled post up in the morning for the previous week’s workouts, what I thought of them, what I’m noticing about the workouts and myself as the program goes on.
Any other questions? Did I leave anything out? Any last bit of advice? Please share!

So exciting!
I actually started and had to stop. I have really bad shoulders that got too irritated. That being said, I would do some extra stretching in addition to what they have after the workouts!
But, the workouts tend to go really fast, it’s really an awesome program!
Thanks for the tip! I passed it on to my husband, too, and we’re both doing lots of extra stretching. haha our bodies crave it – I’m already tight!

Good luck! My sister-in-law borrowed the DVDs from her work friend last year on her holiday break. I did the plyo DVD with her one day and felt it for days. I own the old school Power90 and it’s one of my go-to DVDs when I need to workout at home.
I am interested in reading about your progress along the way! It’s always fun to be so excited about a new training plan
xoxo
Good Luck! I just started this system too! I love the Plyometrics and the Stretch X Dvds. I also did the Shoulders, tricep and bicep a few times..loved it!
Good Luck!!!

Good luck! Although I never made it through an entire cycle of the program, I think there are some great workouts on those dvds. I stopped after a while since I got bored with it, but I still do random workouts from time to time to mix it up. Enjoy it!
i so wish i had that to work out to now that i’m injured! bugger…maybe i should look into it…or see if someone already has it that i can borrow from…((snicker::snicker))
psh, I won’t be letting anyone borrow this for AT LEAST 89 more days, and we’re already talking about doing a couple rounds.
It’s seriously affordable if you do it through ioffer…how much were the Gasparilla races you were going to do? It’s probably actually a pretty equal trade off.
I’ve been thinking about buying p90x and I actually went on the website and looked at the price and decided no to but I might now that I can get it cheaper! Good luck to you and your hubby!
Be careful!!! I was in pretty good shape when I started the program and I hurt my shoulder trying to do so many pull-ups. It gets worse and worse as the years go by and has really set back my fitness. With that said, I know a lot of people who have had great luck with that program, just make sure you know what you are doing and what you can handle.
I’m definitely balancing pushing myself but not killing myself. I know what I can and can’t do, and (particularly for the weights workouts) I start a little “under”, just to make sure I know what I’m doing/ it’s nothing I can’t handle. i.e. yesterday I did most of the push ups “girly style” and I also used a resistance band instead of actual pull ups. Next week I’ll use a chair and do assisted pull ups.
Thanks for your concern!
Awesome Q&A! I’m gonna direct my visitors to this Q&A fo sho!
Keep pushing play!

Good luck! I can’t wait to read all about it.
Interesting note on the protein intake. I had a friend who is trying to lose weight who met with an RD and she told her that she needed 11 servings of protein a day.
The whole protein thing is interesting. I feel like there is so much conflicting information out there, it’s no wonder people get confused about what to think!
SO excited that you’re doing this! I can’t wait to check back and see how you like it. Based on the infomercials, it looks pretty brutal (as I’m sure you’ve seen!). Good luck, girl. You’ve got this!!
You are hard-core. I would love to try P90X but am afraid to buy it. Are you going to do before and after photos?
Ross and I are taking our pre-measurements and before photos tonight (we forgot to before we started yesterday!). I’m still a little on the fence about if I’ll share the photos here, but I’ll definitely share before and after measurements! I’m pretty open on here, so I may share the pictures, too.
good luck! i did the p90x doubles program from june-sept 09. it was great! i didnt lose weight, but i lost about 5 inches and gained lots of muscle! i also was my leanest ever, so dont be discouraged when you weigh yourself. i actually didnt weigh myself at all the 90 days. i didnt follow the meals, but i tried sticking to the calorie requirements and the protein/carb/fat % as best i could. good luck! i cant wait to hear how you like it! i loved it!
im excited for the weekly reviews – i know quite a few people who have done P90X and everyone seems to love it!
i agree with you on the nutrition plan, too. And I think that different diets work for different people for different reasons as well. and by diet i mean, what you eat, not restrictions.
