Kicking My Arse

Remember my declaration of love for spring yesterday? Well, apparently the feeling is not mutual. Spring allergies are kicking my arse! Between the raw, drippy throat, the tissue-grabbing every five minutes and all the other crap that goes along with it, I was out of it today. Yoga pretty much didn’t happen, despite my efforts to make it a soothing "rain yoga" with the windows open. Oh well!

Eats today were quite delicious, and pretty balanced and convenient too! Let’s just breeze through the eats drive-by style.

Oats: (1/4 cup oats, 1/4 cup water, 1/4 cup almond milk, 1/2 banana, coconut butter, blueberries)

DSC_2998

Tofu: (1/2 a block light firm tofu chopped, pressed and made crispy in a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil, kosher salt and garlic powder)

DSC_3005

Leftovers: (black beans and rice – excuse the awkward specks on the black beans, I added a lot of garlic powder and cumin!)

 DSC_3020

Hummus and Veg: (1/2 cucumber, 1 carrot, local garlic hummus)

 DSC_3032

CLIF Bar Mini: (chocolate brownie flavor. can I draw attention to how cute and tiny these things are?!)

 DSC_3035

Veg Prep for Dinner: (edamame, mushrooms, red bell pepper, carrots, eggplant, baby bok choy, broccoli stalk. I prepped this all before work so when I got home all I had to do was dump it in a pan with seasonings and sauces).

Said Pan Dump:

Said Sauce: (I also added a little olive oil and coconut butter  at the beginning to prevent the vegetables from sticking)

Finished product: (sorry it’s not a more creative photo, I was on the phone while photographing!)

Unpictured eats of the day: some ciabbata bread as well as some banana cherry frozen soft serve that Ross just made that was pure bliss on my throat. Oh man, best pain-killer around! ;)

Do you have any natural allergy remedies?

I get springtime allergies, too – and I always forget that at first! I’m just so enamored with warmer weather that it doesn’t hit me until my face gets all puffy and my eyes get all bloodshot :)

I’m definitely interested to see what the natural allergy remedies could be. I typically use non-drowsy Claritin but try to avoid taking any sort of pill when possible. I’ll definitely be checking back!

The Clif bar minis are definitely cute!

I have allergic asthma which, last year, was my most successful year to date because while I was drugged up, I was able to continue running and working out and maybe did my nebulizer once! Thats a win in my book but unfortunately I have to rely on meds to keep everything under control:

Advair 2x daily – anti-inflammatory for my lungs
singulair 1x daily – works to fight asthma AND allergies
    zyrtec 1x daily
    decongestant
Neti Pot – 2x daily – NATURAL REMEDY! use lukewarm salted water
anti itch eye drops/wear glasses ditch contacts
    no dairy/mostly vegan

I felt like a zombie and I blame the zyrtec. I am going to give claritin a try this year. I also MUST have a decongestant with my meds so I either get zyrtec D or clairitin D and that helps the horrible sinus pressure headaches I tend to get.

I’m a firm believe that ditching the dairy and going mostly vegan helped me last year to keep my lungs from getting inflammed (I went vegan January 2009.)

Unfortunately, I still have to rely on those meds if I want to have some semblance of a normal life. I look forward to others’ natural remedies but doubt they would work for me. I’ve been dealing w/ allergic asthma since I was 5. I’m 28, and I was supposed to grow out of it. oh well!!!

allergic to tree and grass pollen. slightly allergic to cats & dogs (though I live w/ 2 cats and they dont bother my allergies, but my friends 3 huge dogs trigger asthma attacks) hmm

I’m the same way. It freaks me out how dependent I am on my Advair to live a normal life. Fortunately, I’ve eliminated the use of most other medicines (I used to take Singulair and do Advair twice a day, but I’m down to no Singulair and I only do the Advair 250/50 once a day usually).

I’ve been taking Zyrtec once a day as needed as allergies flair up, and let’s just say it’s been needed lately. :)

I’ve heard a lot about neti pots and should try it! Thanks!

Also – agreed on the contacts. I can wear contacts most days, except for when my allergies are really bad (like now).

One last also – completely agree on the no dairy thing. My asthma actually improved dramatically when I went vegan and ditched dairy. I loved dairy, and still occasionally miss it, but I know I am so much better off without it, between asthama and stomach sensitivity issues.

I actually was just doing some research on additional asthma triggers, and it’s interesting because I definitely consume some of these other things. Check it out!

Thanks for the thoughtful and well-written reply, I really appreciate the time you took!

I’ve heard that if you can find a local honey source close to your home (as in within a couple miles) that ingesting the honey/bee pollen can actually help reduce your allergies. Never tried it though, I’m unfamiliar with allergies.

Lovely post! I am sorry about your allergies. Tis the season! I do tno know if you drink coffee but I notice that drinking a lot of coffee exacerbates my allergies. Yummy food pics too!

Nope, not a coffee drinker, and lately I’ve had sensitivity (heartburn) to even green teas! How unfortunate. :(
