Country Style Farmer’s Market

Happy weekend! All sorts of low key fun has been had in the past twenty-four hours. :) This is a food blog though, so let’s focus on some great eats and foodie fun!

Last night I made quite a simple salad that had so much wonderful flavor. I topped a bed of romaine with two lime grilled chicken tenderloins (marinated in lime juice, lime zest and steak seasoning, and yes it was organic, hormone free, etc. chicken), cucumber, lime juice for dressing and something I haven’t had in ages – goat cheese! Goat cheese was amazing, tangy and creamy, and my body seemed to handle it better, which makes sense because I think goat milk has a lower lactose level than cow milk.

Breakfast this morning was simple – PB&J oats!

To make the oats for my husband and I, I made a big pot of 1 cup oats, 1 cup almond milk, 1 cup water, 1 Tablespoon chia seeds, and 1 mashed ripe banana. I whisked it with a fork several times throughout the cooking process and voila! Creamy, delicious oats! We usually split it so Ross has about two-thirds and I’ll have about a third. I topped mine with half a tablespoon of organic MaraNatha peanut butter and half a tablespoon of fruit sweetened Polaner apricot preserves. So yummy all mixed together!

Afterwards we headed out on our adventure to the day – Waldo Farmer’s and Flea  Market.

On the way there I sipped on half of this Mystic Mango Synergy Kombucha (they’re growing on me! I think the Mango is a good flavor for Kombucha newbies!).

The Waldo Farmer’s and Flea Market was about a half hour away, but it was supposedly a really big, great farmer’s market. Honestly – it was ok. I’ve noticed there are different kinds of farmer’s markets. You have your green, healthy, farmer’s market with people stopping by usually fresh from yoga or a run, and you have your country style farmer’s markets, where fried breakfasts and funnel cakes are the norm. This one was definitely a country style farmer’s market.

All was not lost though, we did get some great deals! (Including filling up on gas for twelve cents a gallon cheaper than the cheapest we’ve seen it in Gainesville!)

We found local honey (sorry for the blurry picture!):

This whole bag of produce (a ton of sugar snap peas, four zucchinis and four pears) for five dollars:

This whole flat of Plant City strawberries for eight dollars (pretty good deal, considering there are twelve small containers in there, and I think I saw those containers for $1.25 or $1.50 a piece yesterday!):

This new nonstick pizza pan (cheap, and we figured we’d try it since sometimes it can be a hassle to use our pizza stone):

Not bad! I’m hoping to use some of those strawberries to make a few dark chocolate covered strawberries tomorrow, and the majority I’ll be washing, slicing, and storing in half cup or one cup bags in the freezer – perfect for grabbing and dumping in a smoothie!

After our country adventures, I took my husband someplace he was dying to get back to with me, since there were never a ton of vegan-friendly options there: Firehouse Subs. This man loves Firehouse like no other. I got the Engineer sub (turkey and mushrooms) on wheat. It was filling though, I ended up eating all of the insides and about half of the bread.

Our afternoon was spent enjoying a nap, cleaning up a little, and working on our respective assignments/ work while enjoying some old movies. One movie was Two Weeks Notice with Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant. Love that movie! She always ordered Chinese take out in the movie, and considering we both still have work to do and don’t feel like cooking, we decided to hit up the Chinese take out place in the plaza next to us. I think we got Moo Goo Gai Pan (chicken and veggies), some other veggie something, and vegetable spring rolls. Here’s hoping it’s decent Chinese (it has seriously been years since I had Chinese take out).

Have a great night everyone!

There’s nothing like flea markets in central Florida. They’re filled with all sorts of, um, interesting people and things, to say the least. I grew up in Citrus county, not *too* far from Gainesville and that Waldo flea market seems oddly familiar to me.

    I love Firehouse Subs!

Enjoy your take out (and the rest of your evening!)

Strawberry season! Usually it’s a little earlier in Florida, but because we had a much cooler winter this year, strawberry season is a little late. Strawberries really are EVERYWHERE right now, including on the side of the road being sold from truck beds, all over grocery stores, farmers markets, and more! Cheap, too. :)

Awesome deal on the produce – I find farmers markets can be hit and miss too, even depending on the time of year!

hey, forget labels, go for what you love! life is too short. :)

even though i still eat a lot of vegan things, i’m so glad to be free from labels now. not to mention, i think i’m closer to finding out what works best for my body. :) different strokes for different folks! :)

I recently upped my miles running and since it’s been nice I just LOVE being outside… Problem is I couldn’t get enough fuel being a vegan and I was using it as an excuse to restrict again. Now I’m back to omnivore (minimal dairy) and although I try to eat as ethically as possible now I STILL feel guilty and like I failed! How are you combating those feelings? I know this is right for my body because my energy level sky rocketed and I blasted through 8 miles like something was chasing me (a PR for sure even if it was a training run!) so I know that adding in meat/eggs again is good, but I can’t stop the guilt :/

This is a fabulous topic, and one that I think I’ll be doing a post on this week!

Basically, for me, I honestly have not struggled too much with guilt. More than anything there’s occasional weirdness. I initially went vegan, not for animal rights (although don’t get me wrong, I care about animals!), but because at the time I thought it was best for my health. Now that I see that animal protein is best for my body, I’m again doing it for my health. I am the only me I will ever have, so I have to honor my body with what it asks for.

I’ve also done some research, and only feel comfortable buying eggs from a local farm (as opposed to even the “cage free” and “organic” eggs you can buy at the grocery store – are you telling me the company produces “normal” eggs, but then has a separate area where they treat their other chickens better because they’re “cage free” – I don’t buy that) and my husband and I are only buying, for example, chicken once a week, but we make sure that chicken is organic, hormone and antibiotic free, etc. Additionally, with things like deli meat, I don’t eat it very often, but I make sure it is nitrate free when I do.

Hope that helps some, I’ll do a better explained post in a couple days. :)
