This year the start of May also brings Derby Day! I’ve reminisced a bit about the few years that my family lived in Kentucky growing up. I think possibly the one thing from Kentucky that has stuck with my family the most is Kentucky Memories Pie (no, it’s not really called that, but apparently the more popular name for the pie is legally copyrighted).
It’s become a family tradition to make this simple, delicious pie, and a tradition that is branching out, too! Now both my husband and in-laws are fans of D**** Pie, along with my sister’s boyfriend, as well! One year my sister-in-law even requested that I make a D**** Pie for her birthday dessert, instead of any other kind of treat.
The pie may be simple but the taste is not. (And it is certainly not healthy in the least!)
The recipe I use can be utilized in the link to Kentucky Memories Pie above, but I do have a vegan option for my vegan friends out there! Everything else will be according to the original recipe, but just use the following ingredients:
- 1 vegan pie crust (you can find a pie crust made with shortening at the store or make my Vegan Flaky Pie Crust)
- 1/2 cup Earth Balance
- 1 cup vegan sugar
- 1/2 cup unbleached all-purpose flour (or whole wheat pastry flour, which may lend a nuttier taste)
- 1/2 cup silken tofu
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup vegan chocolate chips (Ghiradelli semi-sweet are vegan-friendly and my personal favorite)
I actually used all of these ingredients today, except for the silken tofu, as I had eggs and not tofu on hand. The silken tofu would work fine though!
Off to figure out who I’ll be cheering for this evening! I like rooting for the underdog. Or, as I was a little girl, the horse that had the prettiest name.
Confession: Did you know when I was a little girl I had a deep, deep infatuation for horses? I had books on horses, drew pictures of horses, dreamed of horses, and even had a toy horse for my American Girl dolls! Ironically enough, I’ve only ever ridden on a pony and not a horse!

Oh, I love Derby pie. Way back when I was pregnant, my husband and I were invited to a co worker’s house for Thanksgiving. His wife made derby pie and I was immediately in love. She made two pies, so let us bring home leftovers..about 1/3 of a pie. I still vividly remember sitting my pregnant self down on the couch the next day and devouring the pie. I did share a bit with my husband, too. Yum.
That looks amazing!! I have never heard of derby pie before – neat to hear the story behind it.
Sounds delish!
I totally had the horse phase, I even took riding lessons!! Good times. I had horse shirts, books, drew horses, I collected those Breyer horses… I even had this cool wooden barn thing. And yes, I had an american girl doll too! But no horse to go with it
I remember your obsession with horses (or at least hearing about it every time i was over there)
mmm never heard of Derby Pie before but it looks/sounds pretty amazing. That’s great this yummy tradition has stuck around with your family
I love reading about different family traditions
This looks amazing! I love horses so much but can’t watch racing…I can’t help it, hurts my heart…
Wow, that pie literally looks perfect! I’m totally impressed! Love the 2nd photo!!!
The pie looks awesome – your pictures are great!!
Heyy Girly! I just found your blog and I am absolutely loving it! That D**** pie looks amazing!!! I have never had it before, but I might have to make it sometime!
You now have a new follower!
xo have a fabulous day!
Whoa that’s intense!
Awesome looking pie! Interesting use of tofu in it!
I have never had D**** Pie and now I feel like I must! One of my life goals is to go to see the Derby live… I usually always watch the entire day (yeah, like six hours of TV for a two minute race…) and missed it for the first time this year, living abroad
but I will get there someday. I was a horse infatuated girl too and I think that will always stick around!
What part of KY did you live in? I live in Louisville!
Thanks for the great recipe, your vegan friends appreciate it!
It’s things like this that make me wish I was southern.
That pie looks awesome! It makes me wonder-what’s the difference between a derby pie and a chess pie? We always had chess pie growing up in Tennessee, but derby pie sounds very similar. I will have to make this vegan version soon–it sounds amazing!
