I have a deep, deep love for hummus. It is like air to me – necessary for life!
Seriously, let’s take a minute here to think about it. What doesn’t hummus go with?
I’ll wait while you think.
(Don’t try to tell me any sweet/ dessert items, because dessert hummus does exist!)
Some of my favorite uses for hummus? Well, there is the obvious choice, like dips for vegetables and pita chips. Then there is the option for using it as a spread on sandwiches. I also love using hummus as a mayo (and dairy-free!) substitute for things like tuna salad. Or, if you’re looking for a creamy dressing, add some hummus to your vinaigrette! Of course I can’t forget one of my latest favorites: humsa! Humsa is simply hummus + salsa (equal parts for me, whatever portions your personally desire for you!). Can it get any better than two of the best dips coming together to make one, glorious humsa?!
Well, my affinity for hummus should be quite apparent to you by now. Needless to say with an addiction obsession love like mine, it was quite necessary to make my own hummus instead of constantly buying overpriced deli hummus, mouthwatering though it may be. However, up until now I’ve never gotten my own homemade hummus recipe quite right, with particular issues arising with the consistency. I like smooth and creamy hummus, but it seems to me that’s usually obtained through use of at least a quarter cup of oil. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not against fat at all, but I do like hummus and I’d feel better about eating it as regularly as I do if I didn’t pour a ton of oil into it. So I finally figured out a way to prepare like I do many other things I make: more flavor, less fat.
Homemade Hummus
- 1 can of chickpeas, drained and rinsed (salt-free preferred!)
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 Tablespoon tahini
- 1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- salt to taste
The directions are rather ridiculous, as they shouldn’t even be called "directions"! Just throw it all in your food processor (or Vita-Mix in my case) and puree away!
The water the key. The great thing about it is that you can use less or more water depending on the consistency you desire. And no, the hummus doesn’t separate or get strange once you let leftovers sit. Additionally, you can use whatever seasonings you desire!
Also, for those of you who don’t know, tahini is a paste of ground sesame seeds. You can find tahini in many stores (I have found it in the past in the ethnic aisle of my grocery store) but this time I used a sample of raw tahini that Artisana sent me. Verdict? Loved it!
Now, I need to end this post with some serious discussion. After much twitter debate, I need to call in the grammar-loving troops. Drum roll please, for the big question…..
What is the plural form of hummus?
General consensus is that hummus is both singular and plural (like moose) although we did have some amusing contenders, like hummusseses, hummuses, hummi, humi, etc.

I agree that it’s both singular and plural
Thanks for sharing!
I’ve actually only tried hummus recently, homemade, but I’m still trying to find THE recipe. I’ll definitely try this
I haven’t made hummus yet, but I am getting excited about a black bean hummus recipe I stumbled across over the weekend. And I vote for hummi, just because it’s fun to say

I think it’s singular and plural but I like hummi:) and I swear there’s chcolate hummus
I adore hummus!
Well, my creation of it. I never had store bought or in a restaurant, but I think mine is even better
Thanks for this recipe!
Dude, love love love hummus. I live in an African village and constantly lust over store-bought hummus, which I havenĀ“t experienced in a long time. I make it myself with like a mortar and pestle thing to mash the chickpeas, all the while thinking how lucky people are who can buy it from the store… and then I see posts like this and it reminds me that its WORTH it to make it from scratch! I am going to make some right now…
Love dessert hummus! Case in point: my cinnamon PB hummus.
And, I’m pretty sure hummus is one of those words that is the same whether it is singular or plural… so, plural is ‘hummus’ !
when i dont know the plural of something i fake it.
such as, many containers of hummus. or a variety of hummus. see how that works- i make a different word plural or insert a word that MEANS plural. I am tricky
also, I want to hear of any and all attempts at different flavors of hummus. I have purchased many a container of different flavors, and although I haven’t found a new favorite (I stand by roasted red pepper. YUM!) I have a feeling that there is much more to be had with the homade variety.
xoxo
I also think hummus could be the same plural as singular. Loved the ode to hummus, I think it just inspired my lunch!
I really wish I liked hummus but I just can’t bring myself to eat it. I think it has something to do with the texture. I do try it eat it every once in awhile just to see if my tastes have changed:)
I ALWAYS make my own hummusses (hehe, I think it is both plural and singular). I have several blog posts devoted to the many flavors I’ve come up with. I haven’t bought any at a store in years. The secret to creamy hummus is to heat the beans first, along with the water. They blend much easier and get so so creamy.
I also have a post called Ode to Hummus, complete with a poem!

I LOVE hummus and I had some for lunch today too. I can’t ever get it right at home though…
I have to agree with the people who said hummus is the same both singular and plural.
Humsa–I love it! And I like to refer to the plural as hummi just because it sounds fun! I could eat hummus everyday and be a happy gal! And thanks for pointing out where the tahini is found, I want to make my own so badly but had no clue where to find it in the supermarket.
Ah, the elusive perfect hummus recipe! The best I’ve ever had was the the Turkish Kitchen in New York. I’m excited to try your version – I’m pretty sure the only reason I have a blender is for the creation of chickpea perfection!
I could seriously slather myself and bathe in hummus…I eat hummus on hummus.
I would love a dessert hummus recipe!!
[...] my food processor or other cooking necessities at my disposal. I almost wept today when I read this post/recipe. My slowly dying Magic Bullet would not support the making of hummus right now as it barely can [...]
I love, love, love hummus.
I used to make my own, but as most of my worldly possessions are boxed in storage, I’ve had to purchase ridiculously priced containers of hummus. I tried making it with my magic bullet, but it’s currently dying a slow and painful death, so I’ve had to reserve it’s use for only making smoothies.
My current hummus obsession is the spicy chili kind.
I’m eating it right now…
I finally made dessert hummus this week! I’ve seen the ones you can buy online but they don’t sell them here. So I mixed chickpeas, applesauce, maple syrup and cinnamon in the processor, along with some sweet sesame seed powder I picked up at a korean super market, but I’m sure tahini and extra sweetener would work here. It’s so good! I also added some pb and mixed it together for some grahmwiches today. Super yummy
OMG I need to make this dessert hummus!
Just saw this and thought of you. Pass the pita chips and carrot sticks! http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/meast/05/09/lebanon.hummus/
Oh and, when I was in Israel for ten days I had hummus in some form EVERY day. Often for breakfast. The best hummus (and falafel, but that’s for another day) I’ve ever had, not surprisingly.
Hello, I see you have a real thing for hummus. Chuck out my Crazy Camel Dessert Hummus at desserthummus.com First of it’s kind in the market. We are growing very fast. Thanks Chuck
I make hummus with part water also. Turns out great!
