The Great Waterfall Hunt of 2010

I think quite possibly my favorite day in our North Carolina family vacation was the day we went waterfall hunting. Yes, you read that right – waterfall hunting. We took a day to drive around and visit four waterfalls in the surrounding area. I have a huge affinity for waterfalls, so naturally I was game. :)

Our first stop was at the Rufus Morgan Falls. Once we parked we had to hike to the waterfall, but that just made it all the more fun.

The Rufus Morgan waterfall was huge! Hard to show the magnitude of the waterfall in pictures alone.

Here’s a picture of my sister and her boyfriend with part of the waterfall, to give you an idea of the size.

My cute parents. :)

DSC_0716 The path back led us through little streams and meadows like this one. I half expected to see glittery vampires sunning themselves. Edward, where are you? ;)

Our next stop was, in my opinion, possibly the most beautiful of the waterfalls, although it was not nearly as accessible. The Cullasaja Falls were just off the side of a road, in a rather precarious spot to park, but we still did. ;) Totally worth it for these pictures!

Next stop up was Dry Falls. Dry Falls were by far the most easily accessible and most "tourist trap" of all the waterfalls we saw. It was still fun though, and offered the cool experience of being able to walk down and walk behind the falls.

Behind the falls! (The roar was deafening, but the mist felt so cool and refreshing!)

The final falls we went to that day were the Bridal Veil Falls. To be honest, Bridal Veil paled in comparison to the previous three falls we had just witnessed. You could drive behind the falls, which sounds cool, but truly just looks like rain. Still fun though!

It was such a fun day, and I’m so glad my family got to experience it together. :)

I’ll keep popping in with other North Carolina and life highlights over the next few days, but please bear with my erratic posting schedule as I’m tying up lose ends and preparing for our move next week. Thank you!

Wow – those are gorgeous! It has been so long since I’ve been hiking to waterfalls around here; I should try to do that this summer!

How fun!!! Aren’t those falls beautiful?!!! My fam has a cabin in Highlands (if you continued up the same road those falls are on, you’d reach it! ) Actually, cullasaga falls is where my dad proposed to my mom, they actually CLIMBED down to the bottom…course this was 28 yrs ago!!! I can’t believe they did that… I’m glad you got to see them , they are so beautiful! I think I’ve seen those falls all my life and they are still so lovely to go see :) Bridal veil is cool in the winter, lots of icicles! Hooray for the mountains!!!
