P90X Exposed

Here’s the deal: I don’t think P90X has quite the reputation it deserves.

Say what?!

As most of my regular readers know, I am doing Beachbody’s P90X program right now. I’d venture to say it’s probably the biggest fitness infomercial ever, since most people seem to know about it. It’s an effective infomercial too, with just about anyone getting inspired by the 90 day before and after pictures.

Here’s what the website had to say about P90X:

P90X® is a revolutionary system of 12 sweat-inducing, muscle-pumping workouts, designed to transform your body from regular to ripped in just 90 days. You’ll also receive a comprehensive 3-phase nutrition plan, specially designed supplement options, a detailed fitness guide, a calendar to track your progress, online peer support, and much more. Your personal trainer, Tony Horton, will keep you engaged every step of the way, and you won’t believe your results!

The secret behind the P90X system is an advanced training technique called Muscle Confusion, which accelerates the results process by constantly introducing new moves and routines so your body never plateaus, and you never get bored! Whether you want to get lean, bulk up, or just plain get ripped, there’s an endless variety of ways to mix and match the routines to keep you motivated the full 90 days and beyond!

I agree with their claims (well I don’t personally know about regular to ripped yet), and it really does provide all the information you need. However, I’ve noticed lately that there seems to be a bit of a bad rap for P90X amongst some readers, infomercial viewers, and other bloggers. I think many people have this preconceived notion that P90X is “dangerous” and sure to be injury inducing. People seem to think that P90X is a crazy mess of (excuse me) balls to the wall every single time, 90 days of non-stop action, and as soon as the 90 days are over, you’ll go back to being your lazy, flabby, previous self.

Not true!

First of all, the program does not encourage someone who’s inactive and not doing anything to pick right up with P90X. In fact, it says first thing that there are other programs out there for you!

Within the actual program and DVDs, there are SO many ways to customize this for yourself! The time breakdown of the DVDs is as follows:

1: Chest & Back – 52:50
2: Plyometrics – 58:36
3: Shoulders & Arms – 59:53
4: Yoga X – 92:24
5: Legs & Back – 58:56
6: Kenpo X – 58:46
7: X Stretch – 57:32
8: Core Synergistics – 57:27
9: Chest, Shoulders & Triceps – 55:44
10: Back & Biceps – 51:36
11: Cardio X – 43:18
12: Ab Ripper X – 16:07

The thing you should know about these times is that every workout includes a warm up and cool down AND stretch and water breaks! That doesn’t sound over the top and too extreme, does it? Just (on average) an hour a day, including the warm up and cool down? That’s nothing! (And yes, Yoga X is longer, but many yoga workouts are 90 minutes, so this really isn’t that different from the time commitments of a “normal” yoga workout).

You also have one rest day a week (which you can also do the Stretch X on if you feel the need to loosen up some more) and after every third week there’s a recovery week where cardio intensity drops and you do zero strength training (i.e. all Yoga, Core Synergistics, X Stretch and a Kenpo).

Another thing that makes P90X more accessible is that they show you ways to do modifications. Example:

  • If you have knee problems, they show you how to modify virtually everything in Plyometrics.
  • They give you alternatives to pull ups so you can build yourself up (i.e. using a chair for assisted pull ups, using a resistance band, etc.)
  • You can do push ups on your knees and build yourself up (like I’m currently doing part “real” push ups and part “girly pushups” as I build myself up to no knee at all).
  • Tony will actually say in some instances not to do something if you can’t, or take a break if you need it – they don’t want you getting hurt anymorethan you do. (examples of this are any variety of instances when he shows that you can rest for a few seconds during an exercise, or when in Yoga X he tells you to basically chill on the crane pose if you can’t hold it safely yet).

For your strength workouts, it includes time between each move where you can write down what and how you did. If your number of reps is lower than what they’re doing on the DVD, you’ll even have an additional 10-20 seconds per move, on top of the 30-60 second water and stretch breaks (I believe in the Shoulders and Arms DVD, for example, these  breaks are after every fourth exercise).

To continue the personalization even more, by no means do the P90Xers tell you how much you have to lift and how many reps to do. It’s YOUR choice made by knowing YOUR body and what you can do. You keep track of what you’re doing and how much you’re growing. If you’re doing it smartly, you’ll be able to see yourself grow and improve every week!

I feel like in the healthy living blog community there is, for some reason, a bit of a bad rap for P90X. There’s nothing wrong with it! It’s essentially three days of strength training, two days of cardio and one day of yoga. Plus a rest day. I truly believe that P90X is a MUCH more balanced workout program than the majority of average fitness fanatics can do on their own. And how is it balanced just to go running most days of the week and  do a few minutes of strength training once or twice a week if you feel like it? (There’s nothing wrong with running, I’m just personally a big fan of balance and variety. As well as a huge fan of strength training – I feel it’s invaluable!)

My final thing is this: if you’re looking for a quick fix, a fast diet, a way to drop the pounds immediately, P90X is not for you. It is hard work, like every work out should be! If you make it through P90X, or you can stay committed to any workout over a period of time, I do not believe you are naive enough to think that you can then all of a sudden gorge on cake, soda, and do nothing. You WON’T stop being active.

That’s just my two cents. What do you think of P90X?

Spill the Juicy Deets!

Hey friends! Apparently I’m awful at managing  my time when I get sucked into poor-quality, high-trash television so we better make this quick. ;)

I wasn’t hungry when I  woke up this morning so I did Yoga X first. Afterwards I had a portable meal I could take with me to work consisting of two favorites. A grilled hummus and tomato sandwich and a green smoothie!

DSC 2522 thumb Spill the Juicy Deets! DSC 2524 thumb Spill the Juicy Deets!

The green smoothie had a tropical flair, but not as much as I hoped it would. It had 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond breeze, spinach, 1/2 cup fresh pineapple, 1/2 cup frozen mango, 1 T. sunflower seeds,  and ice. Ehhh. What do I wish it had? Coconut water and more fruity flavors! For some reason I’m not a huge fan of coconut water by itself but I absolutely adore it in green monsters!

I snacked on a Coconut Cream Pie Larabar at work (tied for favorite with the Tropical Fruit Tart bar!) while at work. I was ready for dinner when I  got home, and fortunately dinner was ready for me!

I had seen Ryan make these delicious-sounding almond-based raw falafel, so I had to give it a go. I followed the recipe almost to a tee. I didn’t have cilantro so I just used extra parsley, and I had them in my oven (no dehydrator, so sad!). I had them with my oven dial between warm and 200 and kept them in about four hours. They weren’t quite the consistency I wanted, so I just turned my oven off and left them in there overnight.

DSC 2528 thumb Spill the Juicy Deets!

I loved the flavor of these falafel, but I’m so bummed by half a cucumber had gone bad so I wasn’t able to make the accompanying cucumber sauce! :( It would have gone fabulously with it, I could almost taste it!

Instead, we spread some plain hummus on a whole wheat flat bread with some spinach and the falafel.

DSC 2529 thumb Spill the Juicy Deets!

Tasty dinner! Unfortunately I just killed my crazy healthy day with some chocolate oreos. Whoops. I need them for a special birthday dessert later this week and while they’re not healthy, they are vegan! All in moderation, right? ;)

So, now it’s time to spill. What did you think of the Bachelor season finale tonight? The next Bachelorette? The upcoming cast of Dancing With the Stars? I’ll say this:

1. I’m sorry, but both Tenley and Vienna said at different points that they felt they found themselves and happiness through Jake. I’m sorry, but a man does not define who you are or the amount of happiness you can obtain! If you think that, you are not ready for marriage. End of story.

2. I think she’s adorable and will make a great bachelorette. As soon as she left the Bachelor, I knew she’d be the perfect -ette. :)

3. DWTS…interesting line up! I think Jake is a lame choice (sorry, just being honest here!), Kate Gosselin is just…ugh (seriously? can you just stay out of the spotlight and be a mom for a few days?), and Pamela Anderson should be interesting. ;) I am SO looking forward to Buzz Aldrin and Evan Lysacek though! So cool! I may actually watch. :)

So share your thoughts! Spill!

P90X: Week 3

p90x-posters

The third  week of P90X is behind us! Week 3 followed the same workout structure as Weeks 1 and 2.

Day 1: Chest & Back and Ab Ripper X

Day 2: Plyometrics

Day 3: Shoulders & Arms and Ab Ripper X

Day 4: Yoga X

Day 5: Legs & Back and Ab Ripper X

Day 6: Kenpo X

Day 7: Rest or X Stretch

Week 3’s workouts were great! I know I, and I believe Ross too, saw improved changes in the amount of weights we were working with, number of repetitions, our general intensity of workouts and more.  Awesome!

One thing that was interesting though, was that both Ross and I mentioned at different points this past week that we felt "puffy" (my words) and like our bodies regressed. It could have also been something else though, because we both felt off (I’m wondering if we had mild food poisoning or something – we weren’t sick, sick but neither of us was functioning right). What’s also interesting is that I found myself emotionally and mentally uncertain this week. Several times I encountered moments of, "I don’t know if I can expect to lose weight from this," "I’m probably just going to look the same at the end, I just will feel stronger," etc. I think it was more moments of trying not to hype myself up. I’m 100% honest here, and all of my regular readers know that I gained a lot of weight due to a medication and the process of getting that weight off has been very slow, practically non-existent. Nothing I’ve tried so far has made a huge weight loss difference, and I think it’s because I was so active, healthy, vegan, etc. before, and I refuse to starve myself on less than 800 calories a day like a doctor recommended. At the same time, I also feel like even if you just give a halfway effort with P90X, you’ll still see results. Basically, it’s just been a raw week for me, dealing with my raw and real emotions, life and goals.

I wonder if this time brings up a lot of emotions for others, which is why a lot of people seem to not progress past phase 1. (Ever see the shirts for P10X? lol). Just another musing. :)

Regardless, I’m really looking forward to this upcoming week and next week. This week is our first recovery week, so all strength training is out (along with Ab Ripper…bummer ;) ). I’m interested to see how this week and next week changes things and challenges our bodies, since this is when the whole muscle confusion thing P90X is supposedly known for comes into play.

Stay tune for tomorrow morning as I have a special "truth behind P90X" post planned. Is it crazy balls to the wall every time? Is it an insane commitment? Will the high intensity make you get injured? Is it only for certain people? Is it a pointless routine that you’ll gain back all the weight and lose all the muscle after the 90 days have passed? If you have any questions, thoughts, doubts, or anything about the P90X program, please ask in the comments of this post and I’ll be sure to address them. :)

Sunday Morning Waffles & Design Dilemma

Good morning!

Since Ross’ birthday is on Wednesday and we’ll be in Orlando next weekend, I decided today was the perfect morning to make a nice breakfast for him. We used to make nicer breakfasts on the weekends all the time, with waffles, pancakes, muffins, omelets, frittatas, Canadian bacon and more. Since going vegan though, the nice weekend savory breakfasts have been all but nixed (a tofu scramble and frittata is on my must-make list though!) and we’ve cut down a lot on baked goods. Today was a nice change though, and the recipe I used was so easy!

I used a simple recipe for Easy, Basic Waffles that made pretty awesome vegan waffles. I will guarantee you that you have all the ingredients in your fridge right now! The only changes I made was that I used whole wheat pastry flour for my flour, unsweetened almond milk instead of soymilk, and I added a half teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Our waffle maker is a little on the older side, so it doesn’t always make the best waffles. We have to take the waffles and then put them in the toaster so they get crispy (which explains why our waffles have curves, since they sink down into the toaster and get crispy that way).

DSC 2507 thumb Sunday Morning Waffles & Design Dilemma

Instead of drowning our waffles in maple syrup I opted to make a quick fruit-based topping I used to make all the time! I simple spooned some Polaner fruit-sweetened apricot spread into a skillet with some sliced fresh strawberries and a dash of vanilla. It’s so delicious! This would also make a quick and easy topping for shortbread, fruit tarts, etc.

DSC 2505 thumb Sunday Morning Waffles & Design Dilemma

Delicious, wholesome breakfast! Ross loved it too, he even went back to polish off the last two waffles (recipe makes about six).

Now, I need your help!

I’ve been exploring different options for the site design for the Healthy Living Blogs Database I’m working on, and I’m also looking into giving Sound Eats a face lift. There are two themes that I’ve been looking into a lot, and I want your input (especially if you use either of these themes!).

My dilemma is the Headway Theme versus the Thesis Theme.

I’ve heard great things about both and know bloggers and have seen blogs that utilize both themes. Headway seems to have an awesome user-friendly navigation, where you can even drag and drop boxes, tabs, and more. Thesis has been around longer, and also has a great, straight-forward dashboard for all design features. They both are great for SEO, although I have heard that Thesis has withstood the proverbial SEO test of time since it has been around longer and has more than proven itself. They are both the same price, however with Headway you can use the Personal Option on two sites (which I have) and with Thesis I would need to buy one for each site. They both have equal affiliate programs. I’m also trying not to get too caught up on price, because I’m sure between the affiliate program, extra hits, and the money I make off the HLB database (which is going to cover costs such as these, in addition to the time I am and will be pouring into it), the costs will be covered.

So – do you use either of these themes? If you do or don’t, what’s your input on which reigns supreme/ which you would choose?

Thanks for your help, I’ll continue to research and be sure to report back on my findings. ;)

Good, Sound Eats

Hey friends! Hope your weekend-ing is going well. :) We had grand plans for outdoor adventures this morning but with the rain and drear we stayed inside. I suppose it’s another relaxing day in for the Sound Eats household!

There’s been some pretty great eats around here since I last saw you, though. Check it out!

One of my favorite comfort meals: savory oats. Yesterday’s combination held a baby zucchini, 50 calories worth of tofu, some tomato, half a red bell pepper, 1/3 cup (100 calories) of oats, garlic powder, oregano and kosher salt with a serving of vegan mozzarella cheese (Vegan Gourmet brand) and a tablespoon of hummus to make it all delicious creamy.

DSC 2445 thumb Good, Sound Eats

Ross’ vote won the "what’s for dinner?" question of the night last night with these delicious calzones! Since we decided rather late we just walked next door to pick up some semolina dough from Publix. My calzone was filled with roasted red pepper hummus, mushrooms, black olives, spinach, some crumbled tofu and some more vegan cheeze. With the mandatory marinara served on the side for dipping and drizzling into our calzones!

DSC 2453 thumb Good, Sound Eats

Calzones are a perfect application for vegan cheese – do you see that hunk of melty goodness in there? Delicious!

DSC 2463 thumb Good, Sound Eats

Due to our filling dinner I wasn’t too hungry this morning, so we ended up having a "brunch" of sorts after Ross woke up. We made bagel sandwiches with French Meadow Bakery Hemp Bagels. Mine had hummus, tomato, avocado, spinach, dijon mustard and some vegan cheeze (which I melted in the microwave). Look at that sandwich! Tell me what carnivore in their right mind would turn this beautiful bagel-wich down!?

DSC 2478 thumb Good, Sound Eats

On the side we also had some crazy sweet and juicy fresh pineapple.

DSC 2474 thumb Good, Sound Eats

Is pineapple an amazing fruit or what? When you get it ripe, there’s just nothing that tops its sweetness!

Those are some great meals of good, sound eats. :) What are some sound eats you’ve been eating lately?  I think I have our next week’s dinner menu down; here are some sources of meal inspiration!

Those are just dinners! Some desserts that have caught my eye?

Mmm, I want dessert right now! ;) Of course, I have to recommend some of my own favorite creations. ;)

What are some of your good, sound recipe inspirations?

Cheers for Sleep

MaraNatha winner announced at the end!

Fifteen thousand cheers for Friday!!! :D

Can we just pause a moment and talk about how truly wonderful sleep is? I am so convinced that a good night’s sleep is an elixir for most everything. I felt so physically off yesterday, and it culminated in awful joint pains in my legs (anyone else get like that when they’re crazy tired?). I. passed. out. I don’t even know how long I slept but I woke up and felt absolutely amazing this morning! More cheers for sleep!

Breakfast was another one of my super health nut chocolate shakes. Love it! Each time I make it I tend to vary it up a little bit and today was no exception.

  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1 Tablespoon ground flax seed
  • 1 Tablespoon raw sunflower seeds
  • 1 cup frozen dark sweet cherries (make sure there is no added sugar in your frozen fruit!)
  • 1 Tablespoon chocolate brown rice protein powder
  • 1/2 Tablespoon cocoa powder
  • a few ice cubes
  • TONS of spinach (I seriously just pack my VitaMix full)

DSC 2431 680x1024 Cheers for Sleep

Word to the wise – if you want it sweeter and more “shake” like, add more frozen  fruit (addition frozen cherries, frozen banana, frozen mango, etc.).

DSC 2436 1024x680 Cheers for Sleep

P.S. Big ol’ mason jars are THE coolest vessels for smoothies around. Just FYI. ;)

Between a great night’s sleep and this kickin’ smoothie, I am SO ready to tackle this day!

  • online nutrition class work
  • P90X Legs & Back and Ab Ripper X (bring it!)
  • cleaning
  • make homemade  granola bars
  • finish setting up the Healthy Living Blogs database! (crossing fingers no more bumps come up!)
  • think of fun things to do to kick off Ross’ bday week! (his birthday is on Wednesday)
  • have fun! :D

Now don’t worry, I didn’t forget about the MaraNatha giveaway winner! I used random.org to randomly pick the number and the winner was #30!

Soft Spot

Hey heyyyy! :D Three cheers for Thursday being over, aka the end of my work week!!! :D I’m not excited, not at all….

Today started out on a very reluctant foot. I was so tired! Unfortunately that did not make Yoga X go very well. I think Ross and I were both battling a bug or something the past couple days because we both felt so off! I broke into child’s pose quite frequently this morning, especially during the vinyasa half, because I kept getting nauseas, hot and dizzy (and this was with the fan on, the patio door to 39 degree weather open and in a sports bra!). Definitely listened to my body and took it relatively easy.

Breakfast was rather odd. It was pretty late for me (around 9:30AM) and I had leftovers to use up, so I used ‘em up! Last night’s quinoa with black beans and veggies and scoop of hummus, back in action.

DSC 2399 thumb Soft Spot

As I mentioned on twitter this morning, my eating schedules on Thursdays are so weird. I usually try to eat breakfast around 7:00-7:30 (which was why today’s 9:30 was so late) and then I have to leave for work by 11:30, so lunch is usually around 11:00 to 11:30. Then at work I’m crazy busy and usually have no time to break for food. If I’m wearing jeans I stick a larabar in my back pocket, but I may not always have time to eat it, depends on the night. I come home late and dinner is usually between 8:00-8:30.

Anyway, all that to say that sometimes you just have to channel your inner Tim Gunn and make it work. You don’t have to have the perfect schedule and perfect opportunities to make healthy choices! Even if it seems like things are working against you (i.e. not being able to eat for eight hours) you can still empower yourself to take healthy steps!

One such step today was my Super Health Nut Chocolate Shake as my lunch before work. This baby has some serious staying power to it! I only ate it a couple hours after my bigger "breakfast" but the combination of everything had me hungry, but not starving, when I got home. I actually had energy and didn’t have to break into my emergency larabar tonight! This smoothie/ shake is amazing!

DSC 2283 thumb1 Soft Spot

"Shake" recipe found here: http://www.soundeats.com/2010/02/21/studiously-snackalicious-sunday/

(I used 1 cup frozen cherries, 2 T. sunflower seeds, 1 T. cocoa powder, 1 T. chocolate brown rice protein powder, 1 c. unsweetened almond milk, lots of spinach!)

Dinner featured another soup the lovely folks at Dr. McDougall’s sent me – their Black Bean Soup.

 DSC 2407 thumb Soft Spot

Like all of their products that I’ve tried so far the Nutrition Facts are always great with the exception of the sodium.

DSC 2408 thumb Soft Spot

I’m still a HUGE fan of the convenience of these real food, vegan soups though! For some reason I wasn’t expecting the brown rice in the soup (I think I just automatically think of Panera’s black bean soup when I think of black bean soup) but I really enjoyed it! It gave it a bit more heartiness. :)

DSC 2410 thumb Soft SpotI’m sorry this picture isn’t more awesome – I was battling some serious steam (you don’t even want to know the lengths I took to blow away steam, hold the spoon and take a picture – rather comical!).

DSC 2429 thumb Soft Spot

We also had delicious, chewy, doughy potato rolls! I love whole grains and multi grains, but doughy white breads will always hold a soft spot in my heart (and a soft spot in my tummy?! hahaha, I crack myself up!)

DSC 2415 thumb Soft Spot

I also had some steamed spinach and some crispy tofu (cooked in a drizzle of EVOO and kosher salt) to amp up the veg and protein.

   DSC 2417 thumb Soft Spot

All together!

DSC 2414 thumb Soft Spot

Ross wanted me to show you the pretty little sandwiches he made to go with his soup. I must admit – they look tasty!

DSC 2412 thumb Soft Spot

Alright friends, time to go to bed! Have a great night and don’t forget to enter the MaraNatha giveaway! Winner coming next time I post!! :)

Chocolate Shakes for Breakfast?!

Wow, y’all really want some nut butter, eh? Keep those entries coming, I’ll randomly select the winner on Friday! To head to the MaraNatha giveaway post, click on the below link:

http://www.soundeats.com/2010/02/24/maranatha-giveaway/

(Sorry I can’t hyperlink text, I don’t know what is up with Windows Live Writer lately! It’s quite annoying!)

Today’s breakfast was so delicious. I had a chocolate shake! Remember that Super Health Nut Chocolate Shake I made on Sunday?

http://www.soundeats.com/2010/02/21/studiously-snackalicious-sunday/

I pretty much made the same thing for breakfast today! 1.5 cups frozen cherries, 1 T. brown rice protein powder, 1 T. cocoa powder, mucho spinach, 1 c. unsweetened almond milk, 2 T. raw sunflower seeds and general deliciousness. :)

DSC 2374 thumb Chocolate Shakes for Breakfast?!

I would be one happy lady if I could have this for breakfast, lunch, or dinner every day of the week. :D

Lunch was a Ryvita crispbread cracker with hummus along with some leftover crock pot soup:

DSC 2376 thumb Chocolate Shakes for Breakfast?! DSC 2379 thumb Chocolate Shakes for Breakfast?!

(Soup originally seen here: http://www.soundeats.com/2010/02/22/nonstop-monday/)

Dinner was exceptionally simple and delicious. I kind of thought of it as a nutritionally-amped up classic rice and beans. Instead of rice I used the protein powerhouse quinoa and I added plenty of vegetables to the beans!

DSC 2385 thumb Chocolate Shakes for Breakfast?!

Never forget to rinse your quinoa! It gets rid of a bitter coating.

I cooked one cup quinoa with two cups water and some garlic powder, cumin, chili powder and sea salt. While the quinoa was cooking I sautéed some red bell pepper, a small zucchini, 2 shallots and 3 garlic cloves in a half tablespoon of olive oil. I added a can of black beans (liquid and all – Ross’ idea to make it more sauce-like). I also threw in some frozen spinach to add a few more nutrients. I love keeping a bag of chopped frozen spinach (I have Publix brand) in spinach just for this reason! Easy nutrient add in!

Season with chili powder, garlic powder, cumin and lemon juice and voila! You have an easy dinner that’s not too shabby from a nutrition standpoint. :)

MaraNatha Giveaway

What better way to start the day than with a giveaway?!

A representative from MaraNatha Nut Butters recently contacted me to let me know more about their product. MaraNatha makes a variety of protein rich, organic and natural nut and seed butters, including classic peanut butter, almond, cashew and macadamia butters and sesame tahini. I’ve seen MaraNatha products plenty of times before, but would you believe I have never tried any?

I was sent a coupon for a free jar and two jars of nut butters to share my thoughts on: All Natural No Stir Peanut Butter and All Natural No Stir Almond Butter, both in Creamy.

DSC 2350 1024x680 MaraNatha Giveaway

Both products were delicious! The peanut butter ingredients contained dry roasted peanuts, evaporated cane juice, natural palm oil, and sea salt. The texture is velvety and the roasted peanuts make it so rich in flavor!

DSC 2354 680x1024 MaraNatha Giveaway

The almond butter was just as delicious and had the same ingredients as the peanut butter (with almonds instead of peanuts, naturally). The same rich, nutty, velvety taste also applied to the almond butter, and I have to say I was quite a fan! I’m definitely more partial to almond butter myself (something about a different depth of flavor), but Ross is a huge fan of peanut butter, so between the two of us, we’ve got both jars covered! ;)

DSC 2355 680x1024 MaraNatha Giveaway

I don’t really feel that I can comment on the No Stir component yet, because I feel that the test of time is the true test for nut butters making no stir claims. I hope it holds up though, because that would be a dream come true!

Don’t let me tell you though, because you can try MaraNatha nut butters for yourself! Offered to one lucky reader is going to win a MaraNatha Nut Butter Trial Pack (4 coupons with a total value of $20)!

Not Always Perfect

Thank you all so much for your positive feedback about my heart to heart confession post this morning. I wanted to thank every one of you who commented because I appreciate that everyone was able to be tactful, courteous and more while still expressing their individual feelings. You ladies rock! But of course we already knew that. ;)

So today was the perfect example that I, specifically my eats and cooking abilities, aren’t always perfect. (Not that they ever were but they were immensely far from it today!).

Breakfast was intended to be a toasted hummus and tomato sandwich, one of my favorite savory meals. Unfortunately….well, I’ll let the photo speak for itself.

Let’s just say someone may have gotten distracted by the Olympics coverage on the Today show and someone may not have realized their pan was so hot. This someone was also the only one home at the time. This someone is also currently regarding herself in the third person and shall now stop.

Dang Olympics. First they’re interfering with my studying, blogging (notice the evening posts have been later recently?) and sleeping, but they’re burning my food and scarring my kitchen utensils! There was indeed a casualty in the Big Burn of 2010. My cobalt blue Kitchen Aid spatula (that matches all my cobalt blue kitchen things!) will forever be marred.

Oops.

Fortunately there weren’t any other casualties today, but there may have been some biased food decisions.

Exhibit A: I’m a sucker for good marketing, especially pertaining to the environment.

When I first saw the commercial for the Sun Chips new 100% compostable packaging I was very impressed. Today I had to visit WalMart to pick up a couple things, and when I saw the new packages I just had to pick it up. Our purchases and where we spend our money are votes, and I vote for more 100% compostable packaging everywhere!

Exhibit B of biased food decisions? I was starving when I went to Walmart – like lunch eaten at 2:00 and Walmart was before lunch hungry. This may have also influenced my decision that a quick meal of Sun Chips and leftover soup from last night was perfect for lunch…

Anyway, all’s well that ends well and today was no exception! Workout was great (P90X Plyo, what what! Have I mentioned on here that there’s a guy with a prosthetic leg who does plyometrics on the dvd?! Seriously ridic. If he can do it, I most certainly can!). Dinner was a bit on the lazy side (like I said, my cooking’s not always perfect…or even existent today!).

I had one more item from French Meadow Bakery that I tried (these products I’ve tried for them were all for free with free coupons the company sent me to use to review their products). Hemp Tortillas!

*Percent Daily Values are based on a 2,000 calorie diet.

**Note: For some reason, the nutrition facts on the website (where the above information came from) is different than what’s on the package. The package says  that each tortilla is 120 calories and has 8 grams of protein. Not sure which is right? I’d assume the package, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, I used one of the awesome, delicious hemp tortillas as a vessel for an equally delicious dinner. We made simple wraps and mine contained roasted red pepper hummus, alfalfa sprouts, butter leaf lettuce, tofu (cooked in a smidge of olive oil, kosher salt and lime juice), vegan cheeze (Vegan Gourmet brand!), and a couple thin slices of avocado.

Quite tasty! After I’d already put the camera away Ross and I enjoyed some cherry-banana soft serve (simply blend 2 frozen bananas and a cup of frozen cherries in a food processor or high power blender, like my VitaMix!)

Fortunately I did take a pretty pineapple picture to make up for the nasty burned pictures earlier. :)

Just another note: for some reason I cannot get hyperlinks to work right now, so if you want to check out French Meadow Bakery products, their website is http://www.frenchmeadowbakery.com. Well dang, that hyperlink worked. Anyway – head there, and click on products. Further incentive for you to check it out – there are coupons on their site! :D

Time to go see if I can get this hyperlink issue resolved in time for a review and a giveaway post in the AM!
