This pie is such a delicious recipe that brings back memories from a few years growing up in Kentucky. I was first introduced to this Kentucky tradition when my third grade teacher brought this pie into class to teach us fractions during a popular Kentucky horse race. (And yes we looked at the racing horses’ odds to learn about ratios!)
There are probably thousands of variations of this pie, and I’ve heard numerous different names for it. I make it the way my family has made it for as long as I can remember, which has been adjusted for our allergy needs.
- 1 pie crust
- 1 stick of margarine or butter, melted
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup fill-ins (I love using all chocolate chips, although I’ve also made it with various candies and such.)
Combine ingredients and pour into your pie crust in your pie pan (pie crust does not need to be pre-baked). Bake in a 325 degree oven for approximately 1 hour, or until a knife inserted comes out clean. Let cool and enjoy!
I recommend eating warm and gooey or cool and hardened like a candy bar straight from the fridge. ![]()

Did you grow up in Louisville? My husband and I have been in Liuisvilke for over two years now and love it! I ran through Churchill Downs yesterday for my marathon. Such a cool experience! Gotta love ***** Pie!
[...] This year the start of May also brings Derby Day! I’ve reminisced a bit about the few years that my family lived in Kentucky growing up. I think possibly the one thing from Kentucky that has stuck with my family the most is Derby Pie. [...]
